Ghana is living up to the billing as Africa’s
highest contributor to the Major League Soccer (MLS).
Last season marked the 20th anniversary
of the MLS and an infographic provided by www.mlssoccer.com
revealed that Ghana had contributed more players to the MLS than any other
African country.
Last season, 10 Ghanaians played in the league,
aside other Americans and Canadians with various Ghanaian backgrounds.
And out of those 10 Ghanaians, there was an MLS Cup
winner, an Eastern Conference champion, and a Western Conference champion.
There was also a Ghanaian winner of the Canadian
Championship (Voyageurs Cup), a Ghanaian goalkeeper made the best save of the
2015 MLS season and a club like Chicago Fire named a Ghanaian as their MVP of
the year.
When the 2016 edition commences in March, the likes of Lloyd Sam (New York Red Bulls), Dominic
Oduro (Montreal Impact), Patrick Nyarko (formerly of Chicago Fire and now with
DC United), Kofi Opare (DC United), Gershon Koffie (formerly of Vancouver
Whitecaps and now with New England Revolution), Adam Larsen Kwarasey (Portland
Timbers), David Accam (Chicago Fire), Kwadwo Poku (New York City FC) and
Harrison Afful (Columbus Crew) will continue from where they left off last
season.

They will be joined by other Ghanaian debutant who
have been selected by clubs as either Discovery players or SuperDraft signings.
Former Asante Kotoko defender Gideon Baah is joining
compatriot Lloyd Sam at New York Red Bulls.
Youngsters Emmanuel Boateng, Joshua Yaro, Amass
Amankana and Richie Laryea have also joined LA Galaxy, Philadelphia Union,
Orlando City SC and Real Salt Lake respectively.
The first round of the 2016 Major League Soccer
(MLS) SuperDraft selected Joshua Yaro, Richmond Laryea and Emmanuel Appiah.
Yaro was the second pick overall by Philadelphia
Union while Laryea who was born in Canada was selected by Orlando City as the
seventh pick.
Emmanuel Appiah was taken 15th overall by Colorado
Rapids but it is not likely he will make the first team squad.
